Wood Columns, Capitols & Bases

We have been making columns of all sizes and from many materials for over 100 years. When you need columns that are reliable, easy to install and look great, you need look no further than Somerset Door and Column Co.

Crafted to the exacting "Orders of Architecture", our classic standard wood column designs are available in sizes up to 40 inches in diameter and 40 feet in length. If custom designs are required, scale drawings can be prepared to submit for approval. Correctly proportioned and beautifully detailed composite capitals are also available.

All wood columns are available in a wide variety of the very finest seasoned wood, including Clear Northern White Pine, Northeastern Sound Knotty White Pine, Cypress, Walnut, Poplar, Oak, Cherry, Maple, Honduras Mahogany. Specialty wood species are also available. All exterior columns and pilasters are primed with a first quality wood primer and waterproofed on the inside with a special black asphalt waterproofing compound unless otherwise instructed.

Standard tongue and groove joints between staves are used in the manufacture of all wood columns. Where wood columns are used to encase a steel or concrete support column, two tongue and groove joints directly across from each other are provided for gluing at the job site. This unique attachment method results in a secure joint with minimal chance of separation.

Where wood columns are used as pilasters, a partial cut is provided at customer's specifications with the final cut to be done at job site before installation. A partial cut is done to prevent the column from becoming dimensionally unstable and protection from damage during shipping.
